Vacuum cleaners are an essential housekeeping tool. They offer one of the easiest ways of cleaning your household. So it makes sense that before buying one, you need to identify which kind is most suited to your needs.

Before deciding on the right vacuum model for you, you must first consider the type of flooring in your house.

If you have fully carpeted floors, you’ll need a more heavy-duty cleaner. Since there is no concern over damaging the carpet by scratching it, it’s safe to assume you can use a vacuum that has more powerful suction capabilities.

For bare floors, you should look into models that come with attachments. They should also be on the lighter side. You don’t want your vacuum to scratch your tiled or hardwood floors. A bare-floor brush is what you should be looking for, as it will leave your floors clean without scratching them.

Finally, should you go for a cleaner with a bag or one without?

A bag-less vacuum cleaner is a more environmentally friendly option. They usually come with a see-through canister that lets you track in real-time how much dirt has been accumulated.

A bagged vacuum is best if you’re concerned about health issues associated with dust. You will, however, have to empty the bag regularly and keep re-stocking bags.

1. Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Upright vacuums are easily the most common choice for those looking to purchase a vacuum cleaner because they also tend to be the most powerful. They are also known for having instructions and settings that are easy to understand. For you, that means less time spent worrying about controls, and more time spent cleaning.

The best thing about upright vacuum cleaners is their design: it’s easy to see the progress of your cleaning work due to the mechanism which allows you to tilt the machine as you push it. This allows for more easeful cleaning. Upright vacuums can come with a bag or without

An upright vacuum is the best option if your primary concern is cleaning carpets. They are the best for cleaning synthetic carpeting.

However, if you have carpets or rugs of varying thicknesses in your home, you have to opt for a machine that allows you to adjust its height.

If you will also be using it to clean bare floors, make sure to purchase one that has the option of disabling brush roll.

However, as uprights tend to have fewer attachments, they are not considered to be versatile machines in comparison to canister vacuums. They’re also generally heavier and might require attachments if you’re cleaning spots that are harder to reach.

2. Stick Vacuum Cleaner

Stick vacuum cleaners are thin, with unassuming heads. They are operated using handles that look like sticks—hence the name. They work using a rotating brush.

It’s true, stick vacuum cleaners aren’t known for being very powerful. However, if yours is a home that has many tight corners or spots that are hard to reach, stick vacuums are the best choice for you.

The specialty of the stick vacuum cleaner is, they are great for hardwood floors. You can also use them to clean light carpeting in different rooms of the house (as opposed to all-over floor carpeting). And if you’re in a hurry and need to clean up quickly before guests arrive, stick cleaners are your friends.

Once again, be warned that stick vacuums are not powerful. They are certainly not a good stand-in for a proper, full-sized vacuum. However, many stick models have detachable handles, which turn them into hand-held machines for greater ease of cleaning. And of course, because they’re so small and tidy, they’re the easiest to store!

3. Canister Vacuum Cleaner

The second-most popular choice when it comes to vacuum cleaners, canister models are where the stick and the upright meet halfway. They are slender, like stick models, but powerful like upright ones.

Canisters are the go-to option for those that are ready to invest, for the reason that they’re great for cleaning not only carpeting but also bare floor. They are, however, fairly expensive, since they come with so many functions and operations. Furthermore, they’re quite heavy in comparison to other models.

Canister vacuums are recognizable by a long hose that is attached to a tank, which is called a canister. It features a motorized brush roll at the head. By adding attachments, you can clean not just floors, but also curtains, furniture, and even walls!  Their versatility is especially visible when cleaning stairs.

If you’re ready to invest, a canister vacuum cleaner can set you up for life.

4. Automated Vacuum Cleaner

Automated models are definitely the priciest of the lot, so don’t read any further if you’re on a budget. If you’re not, though, you might just get swept away (heh heh) by the possibilities!

In recent years, these guys have been getting increasingly popular. Why shouldn’t they? With just a few clicks and presses, you’re good to go— leave the machine will do the dirty work. And it can do just that, without you needing to check its progress.

Automated models are created to move around your house. They can detect any sort of foreign body, and will accordingly clean it up. Because of their independent nature, they are necessarily cordless, which means they require charging.

Many models come with the ability to make a map of the house that the machine will be able to follow during each cleaning session.  Some models are operated using remote controls. Arguably the best thing about these guys, though, is that they can get under furniture as well.

What’s not hot about these models is not only their steep price. There’s also the fact that despite their seemingly advanced technological abilities, they are not that powerful in terms of suction—for that, your best bet is still an old-fashioned full-sized upright.

Another thing to keep in mind is that before you let an automated model loose on your house, it’s very important to make sure that you get obstacles out of the way. You certainly don’t want a vacuum machine eating up your kids’ socks or your dog’s toys!

5. Handheld Vacuum Cleaner

These bad boys are what they sound like handless harbingers of bad-ass cleanliness.

Handheld vacuum cleaners are necessarily small, as their purpose is to be portable and easy to carry. They can come with rotating brushes, or without, and while some are corded, most are cordless.

These are best for clearing insubstantial messes. Think of situations like popcorn crumbs on the sofa or dust in the corners of car seats. Their versatility makes them an essential choice for those areas that are difficult to reach, also.

However, it’s very important to understand that handheld vacuum cleaners are not a replacement for an actual cleaner. They’re more like an electronic version of a brush and dustpan. Don’t expect to be able to clean floors with them—that would be very time-consuming, and frustrating.

As for the price tag, that depends entirely upon the functions provided by the machine. For example, some handheld models might come with car adapters, while some might come with attachment functions that make them a little bit more versatile. The price will change depending on your needs.

Bag or bag-less? Canister or upright? Or just a robot that will do everything for you? Without a doubt, you have many options, and they can be breathtaking (heh) to consider. Hopefully, this article will help you decide better for yourself. Good luck, and happy cleaning!
